The devastating impact of Hurricane Idalia in St. Petersburg, FL, marked the beginning of our journey as a family. As the storm unleashed its fury, our home was engulfed by three feet of floodwater, throwing our lives into chaos. In the midst of this turmoil, we had to place our beloved dogs on kayaks and paddle through the floodwaters to reach safety. This harrowing experience opened our eyes to the urgent need for reliable flood protection, leading to the creation of Flood Guard. As we settled in, my wife and I joked about moving our vehicles to a nearby school parking lot for safety. However, our light-heartedness quickly turned to panic when my wife woke me up, alarmed by water seeping through our front door. Initially, I assumed it was just rainwater, but when I opened the blinds, I saw three feet of water surrounding our house. In a futile attempt, I tried stacking sandbags to block the water, but it was too late. The water inside our house rose to my shins.
Growing up in the Tampa Bay Area, my brother and I have always been aware of the threats posed by storms and flooding. Our grandfather founded a hurricane protection company nearly 50 years ago, which is now managed by our father. In the aftermath of Hurricane Idalia, We were tirelessly servicing the Bay Area, ensuring people's shutters were storm-ready, working 16-hour days. On the day of the hurricane's landfall, we worked until it was no longer safe and then returned home, exhausted. Despite collecting sandbags the day before, we were too tired to set them up.
We raised what we could and climbed onto the bed with our dogs, trying to get some rest amidst the chaos. After a couple of restless hours, the incessant dripping drove me crazy. I grabbed a kayak, packed essentials into trash bags, and loaded my wife and dogs into the kayak. We navigated through waist-deep water for about two to three miles until friends, arriving in a grapple truck, rescued us.
Returning home the next day, we found our house in ruins. It took two months to tear out and replace the damaged interiors. Our neighborhood was a scene of devastation, with piles of ruined belongings and construction debris lining the streets. Grapple trucks worked tirelessly for weeks, clearing the debris. It was then that we realized the crucial need for effective flood protection.
